Yep, I’ve got it! I was at Menard’s last night (getting stuff to fix the toilet in the hall bath – don’t even ask) and I saw the new seed displays. I was mesmerized, transfixed, enthralled….it was all I could do not to drool.
Let me back up here and explain a few things first. I’m not a gardener. I’ve tried – unsuccessfully – to garden a few vegetables and herbs over the years, but it’s been very hit-or-miss. Mostly miss. A few years ago I had a great crop of tomatoes that I froze for the winter – 22 quarts of skinned tomatoes. They were so yummy! The following year, I had nothing but failure. My tomatoes got blight. Last year I had a pretty good crop of tomatoes, but not enough to freeze or can because we ate them all!
So WHY do I have garden fever?? Well, this past year I have broadened my culinary skills and found so many wonderful veggies that I want to grow on my own! Not just tomatoes, but heirloom tomatoes, green onions and EGGPLANT!!!!!! I might even try beans, squash, lettuce, spinach and the ever elusive SWEET CORN!!!!!!
My mind overflows with plans and pictures and ideas……I think if I were to look in the mirror I would look like the Grinch while he was planning his trek into Whoville. (just not so evil)
OH, I forgot the herbs! Basil and thyme and rosemary and parsley and dill! (cue in Simon and Garfunkle)
So where do I start? I know where my garden will be – just behind the house, outside my bedroom. (yeah, right over the septic tank!) No, that doesn’t gross me out in the least. (makes a mental note to have the tank emptied before tilling the ground)
I’ve been searching all sorts of gardening sites and have found a few that I bookmarked and want to study.

Since I know where my garden will be, the next step is to plan where everything will be planted. I will need to check the compatibility of what I want to grow. Some vegetables grow better next to others and I need to find out what I can about that.
I've been searching for a good place to start and I think I've found it!
Vegetable Garden Planner It is software with a 30-day free trial. It helps you plan where and when to plant the various vegetables and herbs.
I’m pretty impatient so I want to start planting right away! I could keep the plants in the basement with a grow light…hey, I could have tomatoes before June!!!! But for now, I need to read up on everything and work up a plan.
I'll keep you all posted with my progress.
